Welcome to Crafting Compelling and True Data Stories. I’m Bree Baich, and I’m the Transmedia Mastermind for SAS Best Practices. And I’m Kimberly Nevala, the Director of Business Strategies.

[Bree] I get to work closely with thought leaders like Kimberly to take those complex ideas and make them easy to understand through the use of story as I’m designing and deploying multi-channel projects. Basically, I have the cool job of bringing our stories to life with every presentation, online workshop, and interactive video that we design.

[Kimberly] And I have the pleasure of taking those skills and helping organizations worldwide apply them as we learn how to create highly performing analytic teams and data-driven cultures. And as you can imagine, a key component of that conversation is about, how do we clearly communicate both the art of the possible with analytics? But also, how do we engage diverse stakeholders in not only understanding but actually being prepared to act on found insights? And that’s really where this whole conversation about data storytelling has come from.

[Bree] Exactly. And we’re really excited to bring this course to you today because it’s a culmination of industry research that we’ve done, as well as a combined experience over a lifetime of our careers. And our goal is simple. We want to help you better understand the importance of story as a communication tool, but we also want to help you learn the tactical skill required to design data-driven stories.

As we move through each chapter, you’re going to notice how it builds nicely on the one previous. We’re going to kick it off with a conversation about how our brain is affected by the use of story. And then we’re going to move into some concepts for how to create or design that compelling data narrative. Then we’re going to have a discussion about the planning and process required to tell that story. And then because we’re on the Best Practices team, of course, we’ve thrown in some best practices.

Now we do highlight some industry research and some resources along the way. But we’ve also built in opportunities for you to do some of your own self-discovery.
